(7th century?) Jayarashi is the author of the Tattvopaplavasimha, one of the materialist philosophical school's sole surviving works.
One of the materialist school's philosophical quirks was
that they only acknowledged perception (pratyaksha) as a dependable pramana, or
way of gaining real and correct knowledge.
By denying the idea of cause and effect, Jayarashi argued
against the trustworthiness of inference (anumana) as one of the pramanas in
his book.
To draw an inference, such as predicting the outcome of a future action based on the outcome of a previous action, one must trust that the cause-and-effect model is credible.
