Gods, The
Brhadaranyaka Upanishad (6.2) and the Chandogya Upanishad (6.2) contain the
first references to soul transmigration (5.10).
These books distinguish between two alternative pathways in
terms of quality.
The way to the gods' realm ended at the sun, and those who
traveled it never returned, while the path to the fathers' world ended at the
moon, and those who traveled it were eventually reincarnated on earth.
Individual spiritual realization is the key to embarking on
the route to the realm of the gods, according to the Upanishads' leitmotif.
Others who achieve this insight reach the ultimate goal, but
those who only perform good actions will return to earth, albeit their good
deeds will provide them with karmic benefits.
