In the most technical
sense, Garhwal is the name of a hill district in Uttar Pradesh, India's
northernmost state.
Garhwal is the term for a cultural area in Uttar Pradesh's
hills that includes the districts of Garhwal, TehriGarhwal, Dehra Dun, Chamoli,
and Uttarkashi.
The Bhagirathi, Mandakini, Pindara, and Alakananda are all
prominent Ganges tributaries that flow through the Garhwal area.
It also includes several of the Himalayas' most holy places
(tirthas), such as Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
The area was also one of the sites for the Pahari style of
miniature painting in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, under the
patronage of the ruler of the state of Tehri.
