Traditional Indian
society was organized into jatis ("births"), which were endogamous
subgroups (in which marriage is limited to members of the same group by law).
The group's hereditary occupation, on which each group had
a monopoly, was used to organize the Jatis (and to define their social
standing).
Making pottery was the Kumhars' ancestral vocation.
