Kanphata means "divided ear" in Sanskrit.
The Nathpanthi sect of ascetics, followers of the sage
Gorakhnath, is known by this nickname.
The Nathpanthi's most distinguishing trait is that when a
Nathpanthi ascetic is ready for ultimate initiation, the cartilage in his ears
is cut with a razor to install the huge earrings by which members of this
organization may be clearly distinguished.
Take a look at Nathpanthi.
