Hinduism - What Is A Kirtan In Hindu Worship?

(“repeating”) Short lyrics, generally multiple interpretations of the holy name, are sung or chanted as a kind of devotional singing or chanting.

This is often done in a call-and-response format, in which the leader sings one line and the audience repeats it.

The chanting of the holy name is the main focus of this ritual.

The Name is said to carry divine power as the distinguishing mark of divinity, benefitting both those who hear and those who pronounce it.

Kirtan is particularly popular among worshippers of the deity Vishnu (bhakta), who have historically placed a higher emphasis on the ology of the Name.

Kirtan is a popular pastime at congregational meetings known as satsang, which means "company of nice people," and is said to offer spiritual benefits for those who participate.
