Eastern Indian dynasty whose native stronghold was in the
Bengal area but whose realm also covered the western section of the state of
Bihar (11th–13th centuries).
The Senas were initially vassals of the Pala dynasty, but in
1097 they declared independence and captured part of the Pala territory in
Bihar.
The Sena dynasty lasted until 1245, when the Mamluks, who
had been capturing Sena territory since the beginning of the century,
ultimately captured it.
The Senas (and their forefathers, the Palas) are known for a
special kind of sculpture in which the images are carved from black chlorite
schist and polished to a mirror shine.
