Mount Meru is the center of the entire world, the pivot of
the entire created order, and is located in the center of the continent of
Jambudvipa, the innermost of the concentric landmasses that make up the visible
world in traditional Hindu cosmology.
It is said to reach far into the heavens and have deep roots
beneath the earth, with a divine city on its crest that is the home of the
gods.
The Himalayan mountain Kailas is frequently associated with
the mythical Meru.
As a result, despite its remote location, Kailas has long
been an important pilgrimage site (tirtha).
