The city is located in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, approximately sixty miles south and west of Allahabad.
Chitrakut is the location where Rama, the epic's hero, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana reside during the early stages of their exile in the Ramayana, the earlier of the two major Hindu epics.
It is also here that Rama orders his brother, Bharata, to reign as regent until Rama's fourteen-year exile is through.
