Hinduism - What Is Corbelling In Hindu Architecture?

This word is used in architecture to describe the construction of a dome or arch using overlapping masonry courses.

This method was extensively employed in Indian temples, especially those in Orissa and the rest of northern India built in the Nagara style of architecture.

Because the real arch—in which each component is held in tension with the others—was unknown in ancient Hindu architecture, corbelling was the most common technique of forming an arch.

Traditional name for the southern Indian coastal area bordering the Bay of Bengal, which is now divided into the modern states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
