The Amba tribesmen of Uganda have a fluid system that includes several deities and rituals.
Not only people live in Amba's universe, but so have a host of supernatural beings divided into two categories: ancestors and gods.
- The bulk of a man's ceremonial activities, particularly those related to death, are focused on his forefathers.
- The underworld is compared to the living world, and ancestors are seen as beings who must be appeased on a regular basis.
- Both deified humans and nonhuman gods have shrines erected in their honor.
- To overcome an enemy, tribesmen employ a priest to seek the assistance of one of four lineage gods.
- Anyone descended from one of these gods is allowed to seek his assistance.
