Pagan Religions - Who Was AKHENATON?

The Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep ('Amon is delighted') was born about 1370 B.C. and is credited with establishing the world's first monotheistic religion.

  • He rejected Amon-Ra, the ancient Thebes provincial deity, changed his name to Akhenaton ('it is well with Aton'), moved the court to Tell el Amarna, founded a new city called Akhetaton, and outlawed the worship of Egypt's old gods.
  • Aton had previously been associated with the orb of the sun and had evolved into a minor god. As the spirit of creation and life, Akhenaton believed he deserved to be worshipped.
