Ashvatthama is the son of Drona in the Mahabharata, the second of the two major Hindu epics.
- When Drona becomes the archery instructor for the Pandavas and Kauravas, the epic's two major royal families, Ashvatthama joins the young princes in learning archery.
- He learns quickly from his father and masters the usage of frightening magical weapons.
- He fights on the side of the Kauravas during the Mahabharata's final civil war, killing numerous Pandava friends, including Dhrshtadyumna, who had previously slain his father, Drona.
- Ashvatthama retreats to the jungle with the sage Vyasa when the battle is finished.
