Hinduism - What Is Baksheesh?

Baksheesh comes from the Persian term bakhshidan, which means "to bestow".

  • It is usually considered a present, typically in the form of money, provided to make service easier.
  • This is typically paid ahead of time, although it may also be provided afterward.
  • This may be outright bribery in certain instances, but most of the time it's just a method to guarantee continued care and attention, or a tip for services already given.
