Hinduism - What Is Auspiciousness?

This is a broad word that refers to occurrences or circumstances that contribute to or encourage life, prosperity, and overall well-being.

  • Auspiciousness and inauspiciousness, like cleanliness and impurity (ashaucha), are essential ideas in Hindu life.
  • Auspiciousness is a condition that Hindus strive for, whether via rituals, arranging significant events like marriage ceremonies at astrologically favorable periods, or avoiding persons and things considered inauspicious.

Wives of the God-King, by Frederique Apffel Marglin, 1985, has a wealth of knowledge about auspiciousness and its significance in Hindu life.
