Apabhramsha means "fallen away" in Sanskrit. It is a nascent Mid Indo-European language that derives from the root and parent language, Sanskrit.
- Prakrit is an important northern Indian vernacular language that evolved organically from Sanskrit.
- Apabhramsha was the most recent addition to the Middle Indo-Aryan languages, and it is thought to be a direct forerunner of early modern Hindi, which emerged in the twelfth century.
- Despite having a lower rank than Sanskrit, Apabhramsha was an important regional literary language.
