Antahpura means "inner city". The term for the palace's women's apartments in ancient times, so named because they were the most strictly guarded.
- Although most Hindus only have one wife, it was not unusual for monarchs to have many wives and concubines who were kept in the antahpura in the past.
- In such instances, the king's first bride would have a greater rank, since this marriage was often utilized to solidify a political relationship.
