The prefix Mau is a frequent prefix for practitioners of Thailand's traditional spirit cults.
- These spirit cults are more concerned with daily needs of people and communities, such as healing and human and agricultural fecundity, than with theological concepts like salvation or Nirvana.
- In their practice, practitioners summon pre-Buddhist guardian spirits.
- Many, if not all, of these holy technologists are female.
The prefix distinguishes their professional titles, as follows:
• Mau Du (astrologer)
• Mau Lek (fortune teller)
• Mau Ram (medium)
• Mau Song (diagnostician, diviner)
• Mau Tham (exorcist) (traditional herbal doctor)
