Masca is a Latin word that literally means "mask." It is a traditional Latin synonym for "witch."
- Masks were often worn by attendees of medieval witches' balls to conceal their identities; masks are also powerful magical instruments.
- The word is still used in Northern Italy as an euphemism for "witch."

- Larvatus, Lar Masca, stria, striga, and strix were some of the Low Latin terms for "witch."
- The last three are known as strega in contemporary Italian.
