Because the English language was very recently codified, ancient texts include a lot of inventive spelling.
- The term "magic" is often misspelled as "magick," although the two meanings were meant to be interchangeable.
- Like the word "witch," "magic" is a nebulous term that implies various things to different individuals.
Some occult practitioners find it humiliating to be grouped together with illusionists (and the feeling is often mutual).
- As a result, a "k" is appended to make it obvious to readers what kind of magic is being used.
Aleister Crowley was the first to adopt this spelling deliberately and expressly to differentiate the occult arts from stage magic.
