The caul is a membrane that surrounds the head of certain newborns after they are born.
Being born with a caul distinguishes the child as special and strong; various cultures interpret this power differently:
• Being born with a caul may signal a child's psychic abilities, such as second sight or the capacity to soul-journey;
• Being born with a caul may predispose (or doom, depending on viewpoint) a baby to join certain magical groups or pursue magical arts.
• In certain regions of Europe, the phrase "to be born with a caul" has come to indicate "to be born fortunate."
