Akrura is well known in Hindu mythology as the messenger from the royal court of Mathura who takes the deity Krishna away from his boyhood home in Braj, never to return.
- King Kamsa, Krishna's evil uncle, orders Akrura to entice Krishna and his brother Balarama to a celebration, where they would be murdered in a "friendly" wrestling match.
- Although Akrura sees through the plan and warns Krishna, he is forever linked with Krishna's departure from Braj, which is the bitterest event in all of Krishna's legend for his followers (bhakta).
See John Stratton Hawley's 1981 book, At Play with Krishna, for a poignant and dramatic description of this event.
