Hinduism And Hindu Theology - What Is Alandi?

The Maharashtra hamlet of Jnaneshvar is known for being the birthplace of the poet-saint Jnaneshvar and the location of his samadhi (burial) shrine.

  • Jnaneshvar was the founder of the Varkari Panth, a religious order dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity Vithoba.
  • Varkari religious practice revolves mainly on two yearly pilgrimages, during which all participants meet at Pandharpur, Maharashtra, on the same day.

Despite the fact that Jnaneshvar has been deceased for almost 700 years, a palanquin (palkhi) containing his sandals leads the procession bearing his name from Alandi to Pandharpur twice a year.
