Hinduism And Hindu Theology - Who Is Alambhusha?

A celestial being or heavenly woman who was the incarnate daughter of the philosopher Kashyapa in Hindu mythology.

  • She, like many of the heavenly ladies, was often sent by Indra, the gods' ruler, to seduce sages whose spiritual worth was such that they posed a danger to Indra's dominion.
  • This is based on the idea that celibacy increases spiritual strength, allowing one to compete with the gods themselves.
  • This stored force is rapidly depleted by sexual action, but the discharge of such strength generally has good effects.

Alambhusha is most famous for her relationship with the sage Dadhichi, through whom she produced a son called Saraswat.
