Almost all Reiki done in Japan is Westernized Reiki, which is ironic given that Reiki was established in Japan. There was a period when it was said that Japan no longer had any reputable Reiki practitioners.
As a result, when Reiki was reintroduced in Japan, anyone who wanted to practice had to go to North America for instruction. Usui-successors, sensei's on the other hand, have mostly lived in Japan.
There are also the remaining students of Chujiro Hayashi, who was one of Mikao Usui's most famous students. Hawayo Takata, who is thought to be the one who brought Reiki to the Western hemisphere, was one of his pupils.
